The Accidental Reiki Guru
Back in the days of Obstacle Racing, some of my friends auditioned and were accepted as one of the teams competing in the televised Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge! That was pretty exciting on its own, but even better when a group of us got paid as extras to be part of the television audience.
The night before, the big group of us got together for dinner. One of the team members, Stephanie, was beside me in line and showed me her jammed finger. Oh my, you need some healing energy on that finger. Me, with my one two-hour class under my belt in healing energy, rubbed my hands together and then wrapped them around Stephanie’s hand with the hurt finger. Yes, she exclaimed, that’s exactly what I need. Dinner was peppered with discussion on whether energy healing was really a thing or not with the doubters wanting to be tested on to see if they could feel anything.
The next day at the races, Stephanie took a hard fall on a jump. When the team was headed to the finish line, we all ran around to greet them and congratulate them. She threw her arms around me and said, “I’m going to need you to work on my ankle.” “Ok” I squeaked.
Not knowing the severity of the injury, I’m running all kinds of thoughts in my head.
Oh shit, I don’t know what I’m doing.
But I had been able to help a couple of friends through difficult moments before—one with pain management and another who hadn't slept since her son was killed in a wreck. I couldn't fix either situation, but I was able to help them find some calm.
Does it matter? She is all the way here in Georgia without family around her. A little love and support and energy healing is NOT going to hurt her. If she needs more medical attention, she needs more medical attention, but I can still be a peaceful, calming presence.
And so, I don’t return to the stands but instead go with the athletes to their designated area to rest. When the next race starts, the rest of the group move to a better observation spot, leaving me and Stephanie alone.
That’s when she lets her guard down and lays back down and lets the tears fill her eyes.
Of course, this being televised, a reporter with a camera appears out of nowhere with a camera stuck in Stephanie’s face. When the reporter asks who I am, Stephanie replies, “This is my Reiki Expert.”
Gulp. Yep, I’m gonna just go with it. Saying nothing, I smiled at the reporter.
Later, I’m contacted by NBC requesting that I sign another waiver so that they can show my picture on the upcoming broadcast.
And that, my friends, is how I was on TV for 2 seconds in the Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge playing the part of a Reiki Expert.
Unfortunately, her injury turned out to be significantly more than healing energy could do on its own.
